The Call of the Sea Series

Bodfa Continuum - Plas Bodfa, “History, storytelling and contemporary art…69 creative projects from over 77 artists…”

Plas Bodfa “The Call of the Sea” series, Inspired buy Anita Tregarneth’s poetry, an installation created for Bodfa Continuum.

‘The Call of the Sea’ Series was created for the ‘Bodfa Continuum – the Possibilities of Time’ exhibition, at Plas Bodfa, LLangoed, Anglesey when over seventy artists were invited to respond to the historic house and its history.

Anita Tregarneth and her husband George were connected to the house in the 1940’s. After extensive research into Anita’s life, many aspects remain a mystery. She was born on Anglesey, as was her husband, but she travelled extensively. From 1910 to the late 1950s she visited South America, America and Canada many times, primarily by sea and often alone. She was an artist, a writer and a poet, but there are large periods of her life that are blank, this series uses some of the facts that I managed to uncover. Inspired by Anita’s poetry and her enigmatic life these photographs are visualisations of Anita’s poem, ‘The Call of the Sea’ captured at Anglesey locations significant in her life. Her poetry shows an understanding of the sea and speaks of the draw it had on her.

The installation at Plas Bodfa included Anita’s poem written on the glass of the bay window so that it could be read while viewing the work and the distance sea.
